How Internet of Things got its name

The history of the Internet of Things (IOT)

Many people consider a certain beverage machine, a Coke machine in the Carnegie-Mellon University to be more specific, to be the first internet appliance and example of Internet of Things.

But at that time no one called it Internet of Things, in fact this was many years before the concept got the name that we use so frequently today.

IOT – a dear child has many names

Looking back and see that people was creating connected things years before the famous Carnegie-Mellon Coke machine. But during the 90’s the technology developed a lot and we could see more and more examples of connected devices.

During the early 90’s more and more people started talking about the technologic development that got many names, ”The computer of the 21st century”, ”Machine-to-machin” (M2M) and ”Device to Device” just to mention a few.

Kevin Ashton comes up with the name Internet of Things

But it was many years later, in 1999, that the expression Internet of Things, abbreviated to IOT, was created.
It was Kevin Ashton, a technology focused entrepreneur from UK, that invented the term.

Kevin was one of the cofounder of the Auto-ID Center, creating a global system for RFID (Radio Frequency Identification).

He used the term Internet of Things as a title of a presentation he made to the american consumer goods company Procter & Gamble, describing IOT as a system where the physical world is connected to the internet via ubiquitous sensors.

Years later the visionary Kevin said that ”if we had computers that knew everything there was to know about things – using data they gathered without any help from us – we would be able to track and count everything, and greatly reduce waste, loss and cost.”

Today we can see the Internet of Things booming and more and more products are being created every day. We at Ewa Home are proud to be a part of this technological development – and we’re looking forward to see more IOT creating smarter homes for all of us.
